The origins of this drink are not known. There are mentions of New York City's Maxwell's Plum bar in the late 1970's, the Keg Steakhouse in Calgary, Canada in 1977, and Alice's restaurant in Malibu, California. One thing for sure is that it refers to the B-52 Stratofortress bomber.
