Johnnie Walker Red Label has been around since before World War I. It is a blend of about 35 malted and unmalted whiskies, and is the first Scotch in the Johnnie Walker color line.
Red Label is produced in the Kilmarnock burgh or East Ayrshire, Scotland. Its packaging is notable for the square bottle and the slanted label, along with the "Striding Man" logo.
This Scotch is one of the most popular in the world. It can be found in over 100 countries and is ubiquitous in bars in the United States. If a bar doesn't have much booze, Johnnie Walker Red Label is usually the premium Scotch on the wall. For bars with more selection, Red Label is joined by some of its cousins.
This is a mixable Scotch with no profound flavors or character in danger of being masked by mixers. It is well rounded and will stand up to most any mixer that is normally used with Scotch. Johnnie Red is also quite good on the rocks, with soda, with a little water, and is serviceable when served neat.
Nose: Direct and fresh aromas, hints of vanilla and powerful smoky malt.
Palate: Smooth and quite sweet, with lots of smoky malt balanced by sweeter vanilla edges and hints of spice.
The Cardow distillery provides the predominant malt flavours which are lightened by the grain whiskies: whilst Talisker™ injects the distinctive smoke and spice that characterizes this robust and traditional Scotch.
