Medium amber. Medium intensity aromas of cedar, orange peel, and vanilla. Steady opening on the palate with a soft feel. Peach, mineral, and floral hints. Finishes with a bit of light oak and baking spices with a minute or two of mouthfeel. A classic, airy, approachable style. Tasted 8/5/2008.
Description
Remy VSOP is a Fine Champagne Cognac. This means that it is a blend from the two best regions in Cognac, France--Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne (the word Champagne here is referring to the chalkiness of the soil). The Fine Champagne blend is recognized by the French Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) which regulates Cognac production in order to maintain quality and consistency.
Remy VSOP's familiar green glass bottle adorns many bars around the world, usually sitting next to the other go-to premium brands such as Absolut, Bombay Sapphire, Crown Royal, and Glenlivet. If an establishment has VSOP Cognac, chances are they have Remy.
Fortunately, Remy Martin VSOP is not all marketing--you could do worse. It is nicely balanced with agreeable portions of fruitiness, sweetness, warmth, and oak. It blends well in mixed drinks and makes a pretty good Sidecar. And sometimes it can be found for a bargain, especially in duty free shops.
Known by its frosted green bottle, Rémy Martins V.S.O.P. is the flagship of the brand. The brand itself is a Fine Champagne Cognac taken from the two best crus. And with its golden amber color (old pale), smoothness, complexity and yet balanced, perfectly mature.
