Laphroaig Quarter Cask Scotch Whisky
Review
94
Very light amber color. An intense nose of rubber, peat, menthol, old socks, damp earth, and wet dog. Opens with a slight caramel/honey sweetness followed by malty green plant and herb notes. Then the peat, brine, and black licorice make a strong but balanced appearance. It ends up with a medium-long finish with a somewhat medicinal burn. You can taste the sea in this whisky--quite remarkable. Tasted 1/21/2008.
Notes
Even if Laphroaig usually scares you off, give this one a try. Though it has the characteristic earthy and peat flavors, it is well balanced and not overly heavy. Cut it with a little spring water if you need to.
Laphroaig Quarter Cask, from the remote island of Islay in the western Isle of Scotland, is a very special expression of our Single Malt Whisky.
Double Cask matured, first in oak barrels, then for a a final period in specially commissioned Quarter Casks, as used 2 centuries ago, the result is a soft velvety sweetness, followed by intense peat tones so unique to Laphroaig. Laphroaig Quarter Cask is barrier filtered only to preserve the maximum flavor.
Please note Laphroaig Quarter Cask may go cloudy with the addition of water in the glass. This is perfectly normal when a whisky is not chill-filtered.
Best savoured with a little cool water.
From the bottle.
