Mineral water comes from the earth and contains dissolved minerals and other substances. These dissolved compounds give mineral water minerally, sometimes gritty flavor. The water is usually bottled at the source of the mineral spring and then distributed. You can usually see what some of the dissolved minerals are from the label, and the concentrations in part per million.
Club soda or seltzer water can be used as a substitute, but will lake in mineral flavor.
