Light amber color. Medium intensity aromas of black rubber, minerals, damp earth, and musty dirt floor basement. Opens steadily into a light to medium body. Dark chocolate and slight creamy notes are followed by herbal, menthol, and medicinal flavors. This is followed by some vegetable notes and a long, spicy finish with lip numbing lean heat. Overall, slightly unbalanced, but has staying power on the palate. Tasted 7/27/2008.
Notes
The youngest of the Laphroaig malts, the 10 Year still has plenty of the typical antiseptic, black rubber inner tube, salty sea character that Laphroaig is known for. While it is not for everyone, if it does grow on you, you'll really enjoy it. It took me awhile but now I am a convert.
The 10 Year is a good choice to get you started with Laphroaig (pronounced lah-frayg). It is lighter than the older malts, and more approachable. Lagavulin is another Scotch that is a stepping stone to the very peaty Laphroaigs.
Don't let some of the flavors in the tasting notes dissuade you from trying this Scotch. Black rubber may not sound good, but think of it as a really pungent, lean anise flavor.
